FX bites into ‘Jurassic World’ TV rights following huge box-office success

FX -There are many things that come out of having an enormous opening weekend at the North American box office, whether it be great marketability, word of mouth, and hopefully strong staying power from one week to the next. Also, there are TV rights that need to be exchanged!

Given that “Jurassic World” ended up defeating Marvel’s “The Avengers” to become the #1 movie of all time this past weekend, you really shouldn’t be shocked to learn that FX has already snatched up the cable rights. The movie will eventually air on the flagship network as well as sister stations FXX and FXM, though there ha been no specific date for it just yet.

Are TV rights to big-screen movies really as valuable now as they were years ago? We feel like the answers is both yes and no. There are so many ways to pay for downloads now of movies, and that may replace some of the demand for physical rental stores. However, there are still plenty of people out there who would stop and watch the movie if they saw it while channel-surfing. These movies can draw solid ratings, and it is worth it for a network like FX to snatch it up.

Before it goes to cable, it will most likely get a run on premium cable at some point after its DVD release. We imagine that these are many months down the road, since it is still doing more than fine right now in the theaters and it continues to throttle most of the expectations that are out there. Remember when some early projects stated that the film was only going to make $120 million? That’s still a ton, but not a record.
