NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 3, episode 2 spoilers: Series boss on big Will Graham story
Thursday night’s “Hannibal” premiere was really all about the title character, but if you are worried at all that the show is going to drift away from Will Graham, think again. Even though Hugh Dancy was not present in the first episode, in some way his absence was a key factor in Hannibal needing to continue to kill and create his violent imagery. while Bedelia may have her own inner darkness, she also has her own unique fear, and seemed far more interested in observing than ever actually participating.
The clues left behind by Lecter will lure Will in, and this will be a huge component to the story next week. In talking about some of what he hopes to address in this episode, executive producer Bryan Fuller said the following to TV Guide:
“The following week’s episode is probably the most artsy-fartsy, pretentious episode that we’ve done. It’s our Don’t Look Now episode, and it’s really about the haunting of Will Graham. It’s an exploration of grief. How do you move on? How do you take the next step? What are you haunted by and what can’t you get rid of? There was something that I found satisfying in telling a story that is essentially a poem to grief and what it is to experience loss that you’re not quite willing to let go of.”
This is a series that is clearly going somewhat in an artistic direction right now in Europe as a whole, and we admire NBC and Fuller for allowing themselves so much freedom with this show. While we cannot imagine a story so abstract every accumulating 20 million viewers, this unique style makes every single person who does watch appreciate it all the more.
