‘Big Brother 17’ spoilers: Talking ‘recruits’ as the rumor du jour
Even though we are still over three weeks away from the premiere of “Big Brother 17,” the internet is already feeling a little bit of its trademark outrage. It understandably started when it was revealed that the live feeds are not available to Canadians this year, and now some of that is continuing over to talk about recruits.
Over the weekend, a Twitter user and model named Danielle Ruiz posted something asking her followers to tell her whether or not she should do the show after being asked (the tweet was later deleted), and that already has many fans in a tizzy already thinking that we’re going to get a season stuffed to the brim with recruits rather than people actually going out and applying for the show. To a certain extent, we understand some of the frustrations. Many people out there want to see people on the show who have really stood in line, made the videos for years, and poured their heart and soul into getting on the show. They’re the characters who are easier to relate to when the show airs.
The one thing we will say in the defense of recruits is this: Do you really think that all of your favorite players in the history of the show first applied to be a part? Many of them were recruits who have since gone back and watched all of the old seasons.
Also, exhibit B here is that every season needs a few clueless people to provide live-feed entertainment and to make ridiculous strategic moves. If we had a season of all applicants, we’d probably see a bunch of very quiet, calculated players who were fairly good strategists … but that doesn’t always make for great TV.
We can handle a season that has a number of recruits on it. The only thing that would start to upset us is if we find out that over two-thirds of the cast were scouted at some bar in Santa Monica. (Pro tip: Go hang out in Santa Monica if you want to get on a CBS reality show.)
