‘Doctor Who’ season 9 spoilers: Steven Moffat on enormous creative challenge ahead

The latest -Doctor Who” has always been in many ways a show about high risks but also high rewards. Steven Moffat, ever since taking over as showrunner, has presided over some wonderful episodes that test the limits of our imagination. However, at the same time he has also spearheaded some others that have been met with some polarizing-at-best reactions. He has really seen the best and worst of what the show can do, and how the fans can feel in response to an episode.

Yet, he is still out there trying to create some interesting new ideas and challenges … and one of his biggest ones may be coming near the end of the upcoming ninth season. As he tells interviewer Jaci Tephens at a Bafta talk (per the Radio Times), there is a moment coming near the end of this season that he continuing to have some anxiety about:

“I’ve got a script where I’ve set myself a ludicrous challenge … When episode 11 comes up in the next series of Doctor Who, you’ll see just how ludicrous the challenge I’ve set myself is. I’m in a state of panic about it.”

Basically, we imagine that he is talking here about a cliffhanger for the season 9 finale. There are twelve episodes this season plus the Christmas Special, and early indications this season suggest that many of the episodes we are getting this season are going to be of the two-part variety. This is a way to ensure that the audience remains on their toes, and you don’t expect all to be tied together in a neat little bow by the end of each hour.
