‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ season 1, episode 12 review: Can Karen face what’s she’s done?
Karen is in some serious trouble on “Marvel’s Daredevil” after she killed Wesley and fled the scene. Who is she going to be able to turn to? Foggy is on a bender, Matt is off taking care of his new costume and Ben has his wife’s health to worry about. She’s killed Fisk’s right hand man and is definitely going to be on his radar once he finds out the truth. There is only one episode left this season and with Vanessa poisoned and Wesley dead, Wilson is going to burn the city he loves to the ground for vengeance.
When Vanessa wakes up, Fisk tells her that he’s made arrangements to have her taken out of the country and set up wherever she wants as long as it’s far from him. When she learns that Fisk won’t be coming with her, she refuses his offer. While he was happy to hear that she is sticking by his side no matter what, he was less then thrilled to learn that Wesley is dead. After looking through Wesley’s phone, Fisk sees that the last call he made was to his mom, so he removes her from the nursing home and is sending her to live in Italy, but not before questioning her first.
Karen throws the gun in the harbor and heads back to her apartment to try to deal with what she’s done, but no matter what she does, she can’t escape the fact that she’s killed a man. She has a chance to tell Foggy what happened, but decides to keep it to herself when he starts talking about how he’s not going to let Fisk get away with killing people. She goes to Ben and tells him that she thinks Fisk’s people know that they went to see his mom and says that the story about Fisk killing his dad needs to get out there immediately. When Ben runs the story by his editor, he says he won’t run the story. Ben starts mouthing off to him, and gets himself fired and now he has no money or benefits for his wife… throwing it all away for nothing. His wife pushes Ben to start a blog and to follow the story, so he decides to go for it, but when he gets home, Fisk is waiting for him. He tries to convince Ben not to write the story, but of course he’s not getting through, so he kills Ben.
Matt finds Gao’s drug factory and learns that everyone packaging the drugs is blind, and that they all blinded themselves because of Gao. When Gao sees Daredevil in her factory we see just how scary she can really be. It is also revealed that Leland and Gao were in on the poisoning together, but that it was meant for Vanessa, not for Fisk. They see her as a distraction and needed Wilson to be focused on the business, but now that everything has fallen apart, Gao is leaving the country.
The last few episodes have been a bit slower as far as the action goes, but these have been good episodes that feel like a big build to the finale. We’ve lost some big players in the past few episodes, with Wesley and Ben being two of the big deaths and now Gao is leaving the country. Fisk is very vulnerable with only Leland left and he’s not loyal to Fisk. We are hoping that season 1 will not be the end of Fisk since (as we’ve said before many times) he’s one of the best TV superhero villains we’ve ever seen. Episode grade: B-
