‘Gotham’ finale reaction: Is Jada Pinkett Smith’s time as Fish Mooney really over?

Gotham -Before the finale for “Gotham” even aired on Fox, we knew that Jada Pinkett Smith was leaving … unless this was of course some sort of elaborate trick in order to make you think that she was leaving. Hey, we did see this already with “Revenge” and the character of Victoria Grayson, so why wouldn’t the show choose to go in this direction?

Ultimately, though, that was not to be. She did only have a one-season contract, so this exit was obvious. The Fox series decided during their season 1 finale to kill off the Fish character, having her fall at the hands of Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), who manages to weasel his way out of one bad situation after another before declaring himself the “king” of the city.

Smith was not the only actor to leave the show during this season finale. We also saw the end of David Zayas and his turn as Maroni, as Fish shot him in the head during an extremely disrespectful / sexist rant about how he wanted to be the #1 in the city compared to her #2. The status of Erin Richards a.k.a. Barbara Keen is a little more uncertain, given that Leslie Thompkins seemed to at least knock her unconscious during an epic fight scene near the end.

We’ll have a review of the finale at some point after we have more time to digest some of the events of the past several episodes, but for now, the creative moves in tonight’s episode seem to set the show on a direction focusing mostly on the popular characters, and also getting closer to that Batman destiny. The episode ended on a cliffhanger of Bruce Wayne finding what will eventually be the Batcave, something that was revealed in some ways during promos for the final episodes.
