‘Gotham’ season 2 spoilers: Speculation on premiere date, the Joker and more

Gotham -Tonight, “Gotham” concludes its first season, but it hard to really just sit here and focus just on that when the best may still be to come. This season was the origin story for such people as Oswald Cobblepot, Jim Gordon, and Edward Nygma. Next season could be about their rise to greater power. We’ve seen them start to understand how they fit into this world; now, they could be closer to taking it over.

Let’s start with the basics here for next season: It’s probably going to premiere yet again in mid-to-late September, and have a solid run of episodes before the baseball playoffs begin. We do still feel like this show would be better with a 15-18 episode order like “Sleepy Hollow,” but that’s probably not going to happen since Fox wants to milk this show for almost everything that it can. The one thing that we hope they change is that they go with a more concrete split-season format this time. We’d prefer one super-long hiatus than two or three pretty long hiatuses, especially since that can be hard for more casual viewers to keep track of.

Now, let’s talk villains. We don’t quite know yet if he is the future Joker, but the mysterious Jerome is going to have a part to play in the second season (and a bigger one than he did this time around). Meanwhile, Harvey Dent will be around much more, and we’re hearing that Clayface could be another villain we start to see more of. As to how you set up that character in a more realistic world, we are interested to find out.

Of course, the issue with “Gotham” is knowing that you have to keep most of the familiar faces alive until the days of Batman, so there is not a lot of drama or stakes in whether or not someone like Oswald is going to bite the bullet. With that, the show has to figure out other ways to make this interesting.
