‘Doctor Who’ season 9 spoilers: Steven Moffat on change of ‘rhythm’

The latest -When “Doctor Who” comes on the air for season 9 on the BBC this fall, you should definitely be prepared for something different. After all, the plan here is to not see anywhere close to the same show that we have seen on the air in the past. Speaking per the Radio Times in a new interview, one of the things that we specifically should expect is for there to be some two-part installments. Why do this? One of the biggest reasons is simply a matter of making sure that there is a constant sense of change and flux:

“That 45-and-out rhythm has served us incredibly well for ten years, but there is a slight sense sometimes – about 35 minutes into the episode, you expect the hero music. [Some early episodes are] not all two-parters – sometimes they’re just linked episodes. It’s just making you slightly unsure you’ll get through the story by the time the music comes up. We’ve all got to be on our toes, can’t be relaxed.”

We do not ever expect “Doctor Who” to become a full-blown serial where there is one consistent arc that starts and ends a season, but it does have enough of a loyal viewership that it can do two-parters without a fear that viewers will tune out at some point during the process. They can give you some connectivity, and it may even be appreciated.

For us, the biggest question mark in season 9 is simply that of the Doctor and Clara. How do you continue to build tension into that relationship and their adventures, even though these two are starting to get to know each other more? We’ll find out in a matter of months.
