‘The Bastard Executioner’ pilot finishes filming, creator Kurt Sutter confirms

Executioner -While we are still far from the potential premiere of “The Bastard Executioner,” you can at least relish in the fact that the show’s pilot is officially complete! This was confirmed by none other than creator Kurt Sutter on Instagram (see below), which completes the latest step that could eventually lead to the show airing on FX.

While there are some parts of the pilot process that remain fairly universal for all shows (they typically revolve around the network offering up notes and giving progress reports for what they feel will work for them), there are so many different variables that makes it hard to speculate on how far along a show is, and when it could actually air. What we know is that Sutter’s recent opus “Sons of Anarchy” typically started to film in the mid-to-late spring, and would air starting in the second week of September.

“The Bastard Executioner,” for those who have not heard, is a very different show. It’s a gritty medieval drama that has been filmed in Wales over the course of the past several weeks; while we are sure that there are elements to it stylistically that will be reminiscent of what he did with the motorcycle drama (plus, Katey Sagal is a cast member here), it will likely be a show that stands apart from everything else Sutter has done.

FX could certainly use another smash hit, given that they have now ended both “Sons of Anarchy” and “Justified,” Jessica Lange is done with “American Horror Story,” and while “The Americans” may be fantastic, it is hardly a commercial success when it comes to live viewing.
