‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 4 review (PBS): Trixie’s torment

Trixie -Out of all of the characters on “Call the Midwife” these days, we probably have the most invested in Helen George’s character of Trixie. There is just something about her that stands out almost immediately, whether you are talking about her appearance (blondes are not too common in this series) to also her seemingly-bubbly personality. (Warning: Spoilers ahead.)

Of course, the operating word here is “seemingly.” What makes Sunday night’s new episode so interesting is that we saw a very different perspective of the character than we have seen over the course of the years. First and foremost, we saw a massive insecurity when she realized just how valuable her fiance was to the church. All of a sudden, Tom is suddenly too elusive for her. She is apparently ending the romance, and hitting the bottle as a result of her own actions. All of a sudden, she feels very much alone.

Was Trixie really not good enough for her man? Hardly, but due to her own past, she considered herself such. What makes this story particularly effective is that the show wrote it in as unromantic a way as possible. This was not meant to be a story of a woman who doubted, only to get the man back in the end. We’re not saying what happens the rest of the season here, but this was a story of a woman who let her insecurities get the best of her … and that was it. It could be the beginning of a dark road ahead for Trixie, at least if things do not head.
