‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ trailer spoof surprisingly timely

SNL -We’re not sure that “Saturday Night Live” and NBC are savvy enough to read the tea leaves so much that they knew to air the James Franco / Nicki Minaj episode in the days that followed a new trailer unveiling for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but even if they didn’t, this is a rather timely stroke of luck for them.

For the most part, the Franco episode was a letdown to watch the first time, and it is somewhat of a bummer the second time around. For example, a ton of time is spent spoofing “Peter Pan Live!,” which is something that for the most part everyone will have forgotten about by the time this show airs tonight. “Star Wars,” meanwhile, is a completely different story.

We’re not going to argue that this trailer spoof (watch it again below) is anywhere close to perfect when it has some issues almost from the onset. Mocking age is really such a predictable way to go, especially when you have someone like Harrison Ford in the cast who has been doing action movies forever. Still, Taran Killam’s impersonation of him is wonderful.

Maybe there is a certain part of us that just enjoys watching this again and again strictly because it is “Star Wars,” and that really has a tendency to overshadow many of its other merits. Ultimately, it is rather hard to say one way or the other. All we know is that it makes us laugh, and it also really makes us want to either have this movie out already, or have one of its actors host the show at some point during season 41. We feel like it’s pretty likely they will.
