‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ spoilers: Kathy Bates officially returning
We had always gotten the sense that Kathy Bates was hoping to return to “American Horror Story” for its upcoming fifth season “Hotel.” We are just more than pleased now to make the news official.
In a new post on Twitter (see below) executive producer / co-creator Ryan Murphy confirms that Bates is going to be coming back aboard the FX series in the role of the woman responsible for running the hotel at the center of the season. What excites us the most about this is that it hopefully means that she will have a much larger presence than she has in “Freak Show,” where her character of Ethel was killed off far too soon. She was our winner of Most Underused Cast Member for last season. While we’re not going to say that this is the role equivalent of what Jessica Lange would get quite yet, it does certainly feel that way at the moment.
Bates is signing on for a season that has a pretty fantastic cast so far. Not only are Lady Gaga and Matt Bomer set to be two of the leads, but Cheyenne Jackson and Wes Bentley are each also coming on for some pretty significant roles in the story. Meanwhile, Chloe Sevigny is returning after two seasons off, and she will also be a regular on the new season. Lange is officially not returning, and we imagine that Sarah Paulson may be too busy with “American Crime Story” to have a major role. We’re hoping for more of Evan Peters, especially since it would be nice to have at least one person who has been a part of every season.
