‘Once Upon a Time’ season 4, episode 12 reaction: Is Jennifer Morrison’s Emma secretly evil? Boss explains

Emma -We cannot say that the surprise at the end of Sunday night’s “Once Upon a Time” spring premiere was the biggest surprise that we’ve ever seen in the history of the show. After all, this is probably a reveal that you saw coming if you had watched the promos for the show that aired during the Academy Awards.

Is Emma about to cross over to be one of the villains? It is a little early to think that for certain. What we do know through this episode is that she has the capacity for evil within her, and that is something that she is going to confront at some various points throughout the rest of season 4. This is something that following tonight’s episode, executive producer Adam Horowitz confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter:

“One of the big themes for the second half of the season is what makes someone a hero and what makes someone a villain and what the differences are and what the common ground is … Emma has spent a long time in the series being told she’s a savior and a hero. And now she’s going to have to face that it’s not as black and white as that. And I think going into the second half of the season, all of our characters are going to be wrestling with this idea of good and evil. Not just in terms of what they’re facing as an external threat, but internally within themselves.”

It may be hard for us to ultimately stress how thrilled we are to see that “Once Upon a Time” is going in this direction, mostly because this is a show that spend a while lot of time as of late defining its main characters in simple ways. We like Emma the Savior, but Emma as someone more fully-formed with different pulls is much more interesting. This is a nice reminder that she was not always a good person, and she has a history of doing some not-so-nice things. She even stole the famous yellow Bug.
