‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 6 review: Hidden relationships and community conflicts
We always enjoy it when “Call the Midwife” brings us a slightly different energy, and for most of Sunday night’s new episode, that is precisely what we had. For a good two-thirds of the episode, we actually thought that the show was trying to be a little more uplifting. Then, that devastation came around in the final 20 minutes, and hit is completely over the head in a variety of different ways.
For example, seeing a lively community dance interrupted courtesy of a medical emergency is never easy, especially when this emergency revolves around a teenage diabetic who also happens to be pregnant. Also, the story around the camping community took a decidedly dark turn. You could see some of this almost with a modern spin, at least when you think about Occupy Wall Street or some of the other community movements that have been driven in the modern day. Of course, there are many differences, but the reaction by the police brought back memories.
One underlying story that is worth watching is the lesbian relationship, which is still being for the most part kept under lock and key. This is not the first time that the show has taken on LGBT issues this season, but we do appreciate that they are trying to stay somewhat true to the time period, while simultaneously also giving us something more serialized.
In the end, this season remains a tad too procedural for our taste, and needs one or two larger plots to tie everything together. Still, in between the mother of 11 and seeing Trixie and company at least briefly happy, this episode is a favorite of the past several weeks.
