‘NCIS’ season 12, episode 15 preview: Mark Harmon tackles ‘Cabin Fever’
For those of you wondering whether or not Fornell’s grief over the death of Diane was going to be a key storyline at some point on “NCIS” moving forward, we have an answer for you now that is fairly definitive: You’ll be seeing it on the show next week in “Cabin Fever.”
What we like about this particular episode already is that we see a genuine attempt here to give us a little bit of light and shade. From one vantage point, we are going to have some of the most action-packed storytelling that we have seen to date with the return of Gibbs’ nemesis; however, at the same time you will see through Fornell a friend that Mark Harmon’s character cares deeply for. While he may be in some ways a badass, this episode is proof that Gibbs does care about friends first. He also has a competent team who can take on many challenges without him.
Take a look at the official synopsis below to see some other news in terms of what to expect:
“The NCIS team suspects Gibbs’ arch-nemesis is behind an explosion at a summit for global terror event, but Gibbs elects to sit out the investigation in order to help a grief-stricken Fornell, whose life is on the verge of imploding following his wife’s murder.”
To date, we’re not sure if an episode this season has piqued our emotional interest on the same level that this one has. There seems to be quite a bit going on in here, but it may be the strong, subtle moments that linger.

Cabin Fever is the episode that I have been waiting for. Tonight’s Cadence was just treading water as I anticipate the deeper story to unfold. Moments between Gibbs and Fornell have often been punctuated by memorable one liners, usually at the expense of their shared ex wife. All the way back to season two we heard about “the second biggest mistake of his life” and later in Jackknife as they argue over Fornell driving Gibbs’ car, we got “Whatever, you already slept with my wife.” Of course, they had comical shared misery through the triad of Diane episodes. Now, the coin has turned and they have real shared emotions over her death. I feel that this is not a Diane story, or a Russian nemesis story, but a friendship story between Gibbs and Fornell. It was foreshadowed years ago when Fornell was called to task about hesitating and letting the mob boss be killed. As he waited to be called on the carpet, Gibbs appeared in support. Fornell says , “She said you’d be here, our ex-wife.” This has been a deep friendship bond that has developed over twelve years, though presented with humor. Now we have reached the point Gibbs will do anything to save his friend and to save himself from the guilt of “You were my Shannon.” I can’t wait to see how it plays out. With good writing, I am expecting a stellar performance from Mark Harmon and real emotions from both characters. I’m also wondering, where will they go from here? Can the humor ever return ??? Certainly not at Diane’s expense!

Very excited for this episode! Mark’s brilliant in those kind of scenes. I know it will be very emotional and that’s what I want to see. All the emotions these characters go through. One thing I really love about NCIS is that all the actors are so talented. Definitely can’t wait.
