‘The Walking Dead’ season 5, episode 9: Norman Reedus on shifting sands within the group

Daryl -We have spent a good bit of time talking lately about the return of “The Walking Dead” Sunday from the vantage point of a certain Andrew Lincoln, but what about Norman Reedus? This is a man who also has a whole lot invested into the group, but also is probably the person who has lost the most. You can debate thoroughly about whether or not Daryl Dixon loved Beth Greene on a romantic level, but he definitely did on a personal level. He opened up to her quite a bit which is something he hasn’t done with anyone else outside of Carol. Is he going to want to do that again after such a tragic loss?

Whether it is due to some emotional debris or a difference of opinion regarding what to do next, Reedus makes it clear to “Extra” that things are about to get very messy for the characters on the road, and that some old alliances and friendships may start to crumble:

“We’re in a situation we’ve never been in before … We left off on the road, the very last thing you saw was me carrying Beth off… All of us are hanging by a thread at this point, what we’re willing to do, and the gift of fight that’s kept us alive thus far is slowly fading and people are starting to turn on each other … You really have to pick your battles, and sometimes those battles are internal with the group and some of those battles are internal within you. There’s a lot of eggshells we’re walking on.”

The struggle that “The Walking Dead” continuously has to deal with is finding that balance between emotional moments and then watching new and creative ways to kill zombies. Both are integral to the series’ popularity at this point. We’d also argue that, to a certain extent, so is some semblance of hope. There does not have to be a cure, but you do want to at least imagine that life could be better for some of these people. Fingers crossed when it comes to their journey this time.
