‘American Idol XIV’ video: Mikey Duran looks to impress Harry Connick Jr.
We all know at this point that there is a relentless cavalcade of contestants on “American Idol” who come into the auditions looking to impress a particular judge, but the majority of the time it’s Jennifer Lopez. You either have people who grew up on her music, or you have guys trying to become the next Casper Smart.
Hopefully, the show spending some time in New Orleans this week will allow for some more Harry Connick Jr. fans to have their own moment in the sun. The singer’s roots are in Louisiana, and the singer below in Mikey Duran has a special connection to him in that they both went to the same high school. Apparently, Mikey finished with a much better GPA than Harry did back in the day.
Mikey performs an original song entitled “My Demise” that is solid, and his performance style is fun. We’re not entirely sure that this is the voice that we are going to be hearing on the finale of “American Idol” in May, but at least he is a true original. We wish that there were some more people like him out there, who auditioned with original songs and really tried to take big risks.
We do have one big criticism, and it is for the judges and their refusal to seemingly allow us to have a moment this season with the interruptions and the condescending comments here and there. We don’t really care what J.Lo or Harry has to say about the song during the audition. We don’t. We want to connect to the artist, and they have botched a good four or five moments because of this.
