‘The Bastard Executioner’: Kurt Sutter location-hunting for ‘Sons of Anarchy’ follow-up
Back earlier this year, we promised that we would have a few assorted updates on Kurt Sutter’s new FX project “The Bastard Executioner” as soon as they were available … regardless of how sporadic that they were. After all, this is not a show you are going to be able to write about every day. It’s still in the early stages, and we still know very little about the cast or even the larger story.
With that being said, we at least know a thing or two more about what Sutter is up to now, more than a month removed from the end of “Sons of Anarchy”: He is scouting locations throughout the United Kingdom, in particular Wales. If you have visited his Instagram (a rather glorious place in general) lately, you will notice a series of pretty scenic photos. The most notable one to us is Caerphilly Castle, which you can read about further at the link here. This castle is over 700 years old, and was used for a variety of purposes in the late 13th century.
Location-wise, it would be lovely to see Wales receive a little more love as a potential filming location, given especially that “Doctor Who” is really the only worldwide hit that is particularly renowned for shooting there. The UK as a whole is becoming more and more valued by cable networks. The bulk of “Game of Thrones” films around Belfast, Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, the Starz hit “Outlander” films primarily in Scotland.
If you’re unfamiliar with Wales, we recommend reading up on the place regardless of your intent to watch Sutter’s new show; it really is a beautiful place, and somehow one that is ignored by most of North America.
The hope for us is that “The Bastard Executioner” will replace “Sons of Anarchy” on the fall lineup, but we’ll have to see where the chips fall and take this one step at a time. What we know for now is that Sutter has turned in a script, and hopefully some further news will be released soon.
