‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7: Katey Sagal will follow show with Kurt Sutter’s ‘The Bastard Executioner’
Katey Sagal’s work with Kurt Sutter is not going to be done following her time on “Sons of Anarchy.”
The actress has played the iconic role as Gemma on the show for seven years, and speaking in a conference call (per TVLine), she also confirmed that she will be joining Sutter’s next show entitled “The Bastard Executioner,” which is still being developed over at FX. She did not say much about her role, save for the following:
“I’m going to be in it … We don’t know in what capacity yet, because he’s just starting to work on it. But that’s where we’re going. I will definitely be involved with it.”
Obviously, there is motivation for Sutter and Sagal to continue to working together given that they are married in real life, but to attribute her continued casting to that would be short-changing both her brilliance as an actress, and Kurt’s own brilliance as a writer-producer. The collaboration on screen was fantastic the past seven years, as Katey managed to make Gemma into a character so chilling and at times evil, it has found a spot on the same level as Peg Bundy. If you had told us a decade ago that she would be able to have another role of this level in her lifetime, we would not know how to respond. It’s just so hard for any great actor to find this sort of meaty role, even in this age of great television.
Our hope here is obviously that this new show will simply take over the slot of “Sons of Anarchy” next fall, but given that the pilot has not even been filmed yet, we’re still far too early in the process. We’ll hopefully have a better idea of where this is going in the new year.
