‘The Leftovers’ season 2 spoilers: Damon Lindelof takes you inside writing process
Ever since the end of the first season of “The Leftovers” on HBO, Damon Lindelof has kept relatively quiet on a show that was certainly thought-provoking, but also at the same time polarizing. There were great performances and extremely strong writing, but the question we continuing found ourselves watching was whether or not we wanted to watch something that painted such a continually grim, sad picture of the world. It made “The Walking Dead” look at times like a sunny tropical island.
While Lindelof is of course being very quiet and coy on the storylines that are coming up on the show moving into the weeks ahead, the one thing that does appear to be constant between the first season and the second is simple: There’s not going to be a whole lot of hope for answers on this one, either. Speaking to TVLine, he explained the approach that he has making a show that, unlike “Lost,” does not tease you by saying that things will make some sense soon enough:
“It’s very liberating to finally be working on a show that promises no answers. The Leftovers — and ultimately, it’s why I love Tom’s book so much — is about living in a world of ambiguous mystery, which we all live in. We don’t know what happens when we die. Some people decide, “This is what my life is supposed to be, this is what happens when I die. I believe in God, or I don’t believe in God.” But nobody knows for sure. This show really embraces that idea. On Lost, we owed you answers, and you could treat us accordingly. But The Leftovers — we make no guarantees. If you’re looking for answers, The Americans is an excellent show. [Laughs] I would recommend you watch it.”
We feel like this is a very fascinating show that brings a whole lot to the table, but at the same exact time, this is not a show that is ever going to be a smash hit. It’s just too difficult. So long as HBO understands that, it could last for a little while.
