‘American Idol XIV’ spoilers: A new promo, and more Phillip Phillips / Carrie Underwood reminders

American Idol XIV -Fox is clearly getting their marketing campaign underway for “American Idol XIV,” and for the most part, their strategy is clear: Reminding everyone that they have STARS.

The latest promo is a regurgitation of one that has already been released, and it shows a variety of people from Carrie Underwood to Phillip Phillips to Jennifer Hudson who have been major success stories for the show.

We understand the strategy, mostly because it continues to feel like a direct shot at “The Voice” for a number of obvious reasons. Clearly, Fox wants you to remember that unlike the NBC show, their winners actually go on to be important in the music industry and pop culture in general.

However, we do wonder how long the show can really continue to use this strategy. When you look back at “American Idol” from season 9 onward, Phillip is really the only contestant who is ever used in any of these promos. Candice Glover and Caleb Johnson already seem like personas non grata when it comes to the marketing, and the Scotty McCreery hype has gone down somewhat. We wonder if “Faking It” continues to excel if they’ll start to use Katie Stevens as promotion in here somewhere, as well.

In the end, we feel like “American Idol” just has to do whatever it can to show that it is still relevant, and an important show to watch. It’s not the show that it once was, but we still enjoy it for the most part.
