‘Community’ season 6: Exiting star Yvette Nicole Brown becomes ‘Odd Couple’ regular

This is news that you may have seen coming a while away, but we can at least tell you that it is now official: Yvette Nicole Brown will be a regular on the new CBS version of “The Odd Couple.”

This was first reported by TVLine this weekend, and it comes a few short days after Brown announced that she was going to be leaving “Community” prior to the start of its sixth season on Yahoo Screen. This move was not creatively or financially motivated by any means; instead, it comes from her need to spend more time caring for her ailing father, and the long days on the “Community” set (which can run 16 hours depending on what is going on) are a big contributing factor in that.

So why is Brown joining another show with that in mind? The simple answer here is ultimately that there is a substantial difference between doing “The Odd Couple” and “Community.” This comedy is a multi-camera one, which means that filming occurs typically in front of a live audience, and the production days are significantly shorter than they are on a single-camera show. This is why this job is so appealing to people like Jim Parsons or Ashton Kutcher; they can come in and work, but then have time to go home and do other things. This allows her to still have a job (she will be the assistant to Matthew Perry’s character of Oscar), but to also be there for her dad when he needs her.

As a longtime “Community” supporter, we do wish Yvette the best. She said that she is open to coming over for a guest appearance or two during the season, so we’ll have to see what happens there.
