Midseason report card: How is ‘Suits’ season 4 treating you so far?

Suits

Typically when we do these Midseason Report Card feature on CarterMatt, we tend to do them during midseason itself. This is what makes this particular article a little bit different, we suppose, from the rest. “Suits” just had its summer / midseason-if-you-will finale on Wednesday, and this is a good chance to sit back and reflect upon what we saw.

In the end, it feels like you have to give the show at least a very positive review for what they did. There were big risks, great performances, and great rewards. For example, who would’ve thought that you could keep Mike Ross away from Pearson Specter for so long, while still finding a way to keep him in the story? The first few episodes were probably the weakest of the season, but things progressed and the show made up for these bumps in the road as time went on.

It was the downfall of Mike and Rachel’s relationship that caused the most emotional trauma for Patrick J. Adams’ character in here, and this was delicately handled by the writers. They made him understandably full of rage over the fact that he was cheated on, but eventually, they also allowed him to find a way to move forward (but not all at once).

The best part of the entire season this time around, though, comes to us courtesy of a man named Louis Litt. Rick Hoffman was incredible this season from start to finish. He just brought with him so much energy, and he balanced the comedy and the drama so well. His episode overcoming stage fright with drama was our favorite story of the entire season, and him finding out the truth about Mike was gold. We never saw it coming, and he killed it with his reaction. We’re betting, thanks to this, that we are going to have a “Pearson Specter Litt” when the show returns for more.

As for some other important parts of the story:

  • By far, this was the strongest half-season for the Katrina character so far.
  • Seeing more and more of Jessica’s personal life was nice, but she has to let her guard down a little bit more.
  • Somehow, the show was great without Harvey always being the center of most of the major plots.

While we know some didn’t love Mike being away from the firm for so long, we loved the first half of “Suits” season 4, and cannot wait to see where the show goes from here. Grade: A-.
