‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4, episode 2 preview: Anson Mount’s move in ‘Escape from the Garden’
It probably will not take you a whole lot of time here to figure out what the meaning for next week’s “Hell on Wheels” episode title is. After all, it is “Escape from the Garden,” and the Swede has worked desperately to give the impression that Fort Smith is somehow a version of Eden. Unfortunately for him, Cullen Bohannon never fell for that from a second. He spent at least some of tonight’s premiere pretending like he was on board with this new life, but of course you had to know that he was always looking towards the future.
This said future should come with this new episode next week, or at least we hope so given Cullen away from the railroad for a full season would be sad. Based on the synopsis below, it at least seems like we are on a collision course for a showdown between Anson Mount’s character and his longtime rival:
“Cullen challenges the Swede while planning his exit from Fort Smith. Meanwhile, a new adversary arrives and makes his presence felt in Cheyenne.”
Of course, this “new adversary” is none other than John Campbell, who is coming out in order to “govern” the area. The problem with this? He’s basically a sociopath, and the last person that you’d want to see in power. (Remember, we are saying this about a show that already has a Mayor Mickey on board.)
We’ll have more on this episode throughout the week ahead, so keep an eye out for that.

Loved the premiere episode with all of its darkness and power struggles between old and new characters, as well as the sinister feeling there is evil just around the corner or right next to you. Loved the acting by all the cast. As always, Anson Mount and Chris Heyerdahl make a wonderful warring duo. Not only is the Swede passing himself off as Bishop Dutson, but also is now speaking in tongues like a tent revival preacher. We all know what he’s up to, but I kept think of him as the Serpent in the Garden of Eden. charming and utterly evil. ; corrupt and corrupting. After Baby William is born and growing closer to Naomi, Cullen knows he has to take them with him when he leaves, not only for their safety, but his growing feelings of love for a family. He has to get by the Swede, and “Mother Hatch” who is Naomi’s stepmother, whose son, Jeb, was hung after his father killed Dick Barlow. She wants the baby to be raised as Naomi’s brother and named Jebediah Hatch, to replace her dead son. It’s possible she and the Bishop will band together to keep Cullen from taking Naomi and William.
