‘America’s Got Talent’ rankings: Why Miguel Dakota, David & Leeman, Dan Naturman may shine

The full review -Now that the “America’s Got Talent” live shows are just about here, it’s therefore time for us to officially kick off what has become another CarterMatt tradition: Contestant rankings!

Every week, we’ll profile the top contenders using a criteria of performance history, quality, screen time, edit, and of course past voting trends on this show. That may be the most important of all, since singers are always heavily favored.

Here’s our take on where the first group stands going into Tuesday night.

12. Jasmine Flowers – The young ballet team will probably be cute, but we have no recollection of them and they have little to no chance.

11. J.D. Anderson – We ultimately feel the same way about J.D., mostly because our main memory of his is of him charging into ice and cutting open the back of his head.

10. The Willis Clan – Far too hokey for this competition. Even if they give a good performance, they’ll really need some luck on their side to advance.

9. Sean and Luke – Despite the screen time, these guys are just not great dancers like we’ve seen on the show before. They’ve got major competition, including what we have to share in a minute.

8. Flight Crew Jump Rope – They’ll probably be pretty good (or at least just good enough to advance), but not the worst of the night. Their entire placement is almost dependent on if they can do this without any mistakes.

7. Emily West – We never want to rule out a solo singer, but given that she’s neither a good-looking guy or a teenager hinders her. These are just what, per the show’s history, tend to get the most votes.

6. Valo & Bobby – We feel the same way about them as Flight Crew. They’ll probably be good, but will likely be a casualty of too many good acts unless they really do something spectacular.

5. Baila Conmigo – The best dance act of this group, but the question here is just if anyone is really interested in a ballroom act at this point. It’s been done plenty of times here with little variation.

4. Dan Naturman – A solid comic, and therefore one who has to be reckoned with. His problem in this round will mostly be just that there are some other good acts, and with “Last Comic Standing” back on the air, the expectation for comics on this show is probably higher.

3. Julia Goodwin – Being a young singer always goes a long ways here, especially if you are a young, likable singer. There’s no reason to be pessimistic about Julia’s chances.

2. David & Leeman – We tend to overrate magic acts a little, since we tend to love them more so than the rest of viewers for this show. The reason we’re confident about these two is tied to their experience, and that they were extremely impressive in their audition.

1. Miguel Dakota – A distinct voice, a good look, and a guitar. These three things almost always equal success for a singer on this show. Heck, just being a halfway-decent singer is typically enough alone to get you through to the next round on this show.
