‘Royal Pains’ season 6, episode 6 review: The wrath and risks of Ray

Coming out Tuesday night’s “Royal Pains,” the good news for Evan and Hank seems to be that they have taken care of one of their biggest problems regarding the future of HankMed: The possible location of a new facility where they can perform tests other than Hamptons Heritage.

The problem here is simple enough: The only way to get this arrangement is to form a partnership with Ray, who we are starting to feel is one of the last people humanly possible that you want to from a partnership with. This is a guy who showed with his chef that he has a temper, and is not afraid to let loose it when things are not going his way. If anyone in the Lawson family ever crosses him, trouble will arise … and it is already bad enough that Evan made a deal with this guy without telling anyone else about it just yet.

“Everybody Loves Ray, Man” was still mostly a fun episode, in particular the story of Jeremiah learning through Viviana that the burlesque dancers at the club next door to the facility were not terrible people that would destroy his reputation. This unlikely love story sort of evolved out of nowhere this week, but we didn’t entirely mind thanks to it being entertaining. This story may be going somewhere, and we’ve always felt that if he and Divya are endgame, we do think that it will take her seeing him with another woman to really make her start to realize that there could be feelings there.

As for Divya, her story feels right now to be one of the weaker parts of the show, mostly because dealing with nannies takes her away from many of the other characters. While going part-time is probably a realistic option for a mother who wants to spend more time with her child, is that really the best thing from the show to separate her further? We’re always leery about children getting in the way of the action on a show, and stirring up the dynamic too much. Maybe this qualm comes mostly out of anxiety that something like this will happen.

While it wasn’t our favorite “Royal Pains” of the season, at least this one managed to further establish this Ray character, the trouble Evan is in, and further along Jeremiah’s new roman to possible romance. Not bad for an hour of lighthearted TV. Grade: B.
