‘Halt and Catch Fire’ episode 8 preview: ‘The 214s,’ COMDEX, and more

As we start to near the end of “Halt and Catch Fire” season 1, there is one thing that we are pretty sure we will see before things end: Cardiff’s computer in some shape or form. We’ve been building up to it, and if the show puts this part of the story off for too long, there will be a number of people getting so angry that they will be in need of a reboot.

What we do know about next week’s episode is that COMDEX will be a theme for it. This convention does not actually exist in real life anymore, but during the 80s, 90s, and the early 00s, this was a very popular expo in Las Vegas where some of the best computers would turn up. It’s almost a shame that they are not around anymore, but we understand it given there are so many other conventions that are out there now.

As for the title, it may be so specific that we are still unsure of its meaning, save for that 214 is a popular area code in the Dallas area, and perhaps “The 214s” has something to do with that. The synopsis below does not offer much insight into either the title, or the story itself save for something pertaining to Bosworth:

“The team finalizes preparations for COMDEX; Bosworth makes a sacrifice for the good of the program.”

The only guess that we have when it comes to Bosworth is that he puts more of his money on the line, given that he expressed an interest in doing both that and anything else that will help get the program to the next level in the end.
