‘Sam & Cat’: Ariana Grande, Jennette McCurdy show formally canceled by Nickelodeon
It looks like there is ultimately not going to be another chapter for “Sam & Cat,” after all. After production for the Nickelodeon show ended earlier this year and the cast went on an extended hiatus, there were questions then about whether or not the show would come back for more. Jennette McCurdy had stayed away from the Kids Choice Awards in protest of some behind-the-scenes issues, while Ariana Grande’s career as a pop star has exploded over the past few months with the success of “Problem.”
In a statement today, Nickelodeon finally made it official that after just one long season, the series is officially no more:
“Nickelodeon will not be producing more episodes of Sam & Cat … We are very proud of the show and its very talented cast and we wish them all the best.”
What ultimately lead to the end of the show was the same exact thing that has caused many others to end early: People going in different places in their careers. Both McCurdy and Grande had already had extensive careers at Nick before even doing this show, so there was not suddenly some massive need on the part of either one of them to still stick around there and continue making it. They just grew up a little too quickly to still be doing a show geared mostly at kids, and want to do other things.
In the end, we feel like this is for the best. McCurdy could thrive well on a sitcom or another comedy elsewhere, while Grande will likely try to just make this music career last for a while. With “Problem” being so successful, she’s off to a great start.
