‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 spoilers: Director on those Lady Stoneheart rumors
We are going to start this “Game of Thrones” article with the same warning that we used with one following the finale last night: There are MASSIVE SPOILERS ahead not just for the season 4 finale, but for a key character from the books that has yet to appear on the show. If you want to avoid anything that may ruin something for you, stop reading now.
If you are still here and interested, then look below to see some commentary from director Alex Graves on whether or not a return for one of the dead characters is in order.
Now, let’s talk Lady Stoneheart. We went through a little of this in the article following last night’s finale, and how it may have been a creative or scheduling decision when it comes to Michelle Fairley and everything else that she was doing.
In the end, it appears that her omission from season 4 was definitely creative, and it is not entire clear whether Catelyn Stark in supernatural form will be used at all. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Graves explains that despite all the internet rumors (otherwise known as many media outlets writing about her millions of times to solicit hits from fans), Stoneheart was never intended to be a part of season 4:
“It’s a great question, because it’s all I asked about last year when I was doing [the episode with Brotherhood Without Banners leader] Beric Dondarrion — who ultimately is the person who finds Catelyn and turns her into Lady Stoneheart. But no, they didn’t do it. It was never on the docket to do this season — ever.
“They [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] have such a challenge adapting the books into a really focused television experience. It’s very hard, it’s very complicated, it’s much harder then they’ve been given credit for, I think — and they do a brilliant job. But to bring back Michelle Fairley, one of the greatest actresses around, to be a zombie for a little while — and just kill people? It is really sort of, what are we doing with that? How does it play into the whole story in a way that we’re really going to like? It just didn’t end up being a part of what was going to happen this season. And finally one [more] reason: In case you didn’t notice, a lot happens this season … To add that in is something they opted out of. But what’s funny is that it was never going to be in the season, yet it took off on the Internet like it was going to happen.”
As for season 5, Graves said that he honestly did not know what the plan with Stoneheart is. We can say that Michelle Fairley does not have another television series on the docket (at least publicly) for the next few months, now that she is through with “24: Live Another Day.” It also feels like Stoneheart would be an appropriate addition, given that we have now gone through some of the most shocking events of the George R.R. Martin series.
We’ll just have to wait and see on this one, but we’ll try to cover this as best we can without giving anything away for fans of the show only.
