ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 7: Is introducing new villain for Stana Katic, Nathan Fillion right move?
In discussing some of the recent stories regarding the shocking “Castle” cliffhanger and where the story can most feasibly go from here, we see time and time again that the most likely direction for the series is the return of 3XK, or some other villain who is tied to the show’s history. The show already has an established mythology, and when it comes to trying to understand who would be motivated to do something horrible to Richard Castle.
But let’s look beyond this premiere event for the moment, since there has already been so much speculating done with that. What happens a little later in the season? We know that we would love to see the likes of Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic actually facing off against a new longterm villain for a change, and not someone who has been around for the past few years in some shape or form. This could be a new, interesting way to keep the show fresh. Specifically, we see a few individual benefits to this:
- The opportunity to cast a notable guest star, similar to what they were able to do with Lisa Edelstein last season.
- An opportunity to throw something new at the characters, and challenge the relationship that they all have. How about having a killer who is tied somehow to Alexis or Martha? It’s an interesting new way to include them in the show.
- Also, it brings in new viewers without making them feel like they have missed out on something from the first few seasons.
Anytime you are in season 7, this is when new ideas must flourish. With that in mind, why not try something?
What do you think: Should there be a brand-new villain introduced into the “Castle” world at this time? Share your thoughts with a comment, and click here to see some more news regarding the writers’ return to work.

Unless they first straighten out the mess created by the finale – both with Beckett and with the non-wedding – a new villian or an old one won’t matter. The finale has created a set up that makes every possible villian scenario feel like a “let’s find ways to delay them getting married for as long as possible” storyline. Plus, Marlowe’s interviews make me wonder what other new ways he’s going to try taking Beckett down, “a peg or two.” I’m coming back to see what happens in the premiere. If they can undo the damage from the finale then I’ll be able to think about further down the line in season seven.

If I remember correctly fans were not happy with the ending of the season 5 finale after it aired as well. But with the premier of season 6 everyone seemed to be happy with the way they played the story out. So give it a chance to redeem the unhappiness that some felt at the season 6 cliffhanger. I for one am interested to see which direction they take. And I wouldn’t mind seeing a new villain come to play this next season. They finally wrapped up the Bracken story, which in my opinion was definitely time. Now they still have 3xk and his story should come into play and end in season 7 so why not a new to keep the fans interested and the storyline fresh and in a new and good direction.

The series, as a whole, has been great! Granted, one bad, and hopefully, forgotten episode (Season 6 Finale) will not detour me from watching Season 7. I’m pretty sure the creator and writer’s of “Castle” realize that Season 6 finale was a flop. Let’s see what they come up with for Season 7! Given all the episodes that I’ve seen (excluding Season 6 finale), I’m sure it will be a kickass season. I wish them the best!

How about Pi being involved somehow? He had to be written in for a reason and nothing in series 6 really explained his presence, behaviour etc. That said, the finale really sucked, but I am really looking forward to series 7.

The last thing Castle needs is a new villain. We have more than enough “mythology” to get us over the finish line for the series with Castle’s father and 3XK. Mr. Marlowe likes to talk about “organic” story lines. I cannot see how destroying the Castle-Beckett wedding and tainting the imagery of a future “make-up” wedding for the fans was/is organic. Fans of the show want Kate & Rick to live a normal happy life, perhaps with a baby thrown in before the series finale. That was the beauty of wrapping up the killer of Johanna Beckett murder arc- which went on for SIX YEARS. If the writers have to go searching for new mythology, it is time to pull the plug on the series. After that debacle of a finale, it is already on life-support. I believe the reason the ratings were so high this season, was due to viewers who fell in love with the Castle-Beckett relationship after catching it for the first time on TNT. They were looking for the happily ever wedding, too. I can’t help but believe many viewers- old and new – were so turned off after the finale that they won’t be sticking around for long after the Season 7 premiere. I expect the first three new episodes to bring in viewers, but drop in ratings after that. Curiosity on how Castle survives will cause most to tune in for awhile – but poor and ridiculous plot devices will send them packing. Perhaps Mr. Marlowe & Company will pull a rabbit out of a hat, but I don’t hold out much hope. Cue the theme music from “Jaws”, the shark appears to have jumped big time.

Actually I feel like they need a new villain to get things fired up. They just potentially ended their biggest villain when Bracken was finally put behind bars. I think 3XK would be awesome to really focus on, but if they want to bring in a new awesome villain that’ll be cool too! As for Kate and Rick and their “normal” life: when have they ever been normal? I think the whole reason they bring people in is because of the dynamic they have from the out of the box situations they run into. They are going to end up together and this isn’t the end of their relationship obviously, it just adds more action and drama too it: a main component of their relationship. Honestly, the finale was okay, more like an average episode than the finale, but the end was epic and set up for an awesome season 7 premier! Everyone is like “This is the end of Castle. They suck now!” It was one episode and the rest of season 6 was great! I bet they are going to come back strong and everything will be fine. People just need to stop panicking for a moment and just get pumped for season 7!

I don’t really like the idea of a new villain. I actually rather continue the Bracken villain story. That would be more interesting or realistic to me. He went to jail but he can still be a threat. A new villain now seems so fabricated and frustrating.

I totally agree with you Phoebe. Just from the look Bracken gave Beckett in the second last episode, Veritas, I thought he might be back to stir up some chaos for the couple. I don’t think 3XK is responsible for the Castle crash in the season finale some others have suggested. So with him still in the picture, I do think that another recurring villain would be too many.
I really think Bracken pulled this off.

I wasn’t thrilled with the ending to season 6, but I LOVE Castle & Beckett and would never stop watching the show. Although I have not been able to re-watch the non-wedding show. There have been a couple of shows where I wasn’t thrilled with the direction, but I still maintain faith in Andrew Marlowe and his writers that all will be well with Castle & Beckett. Yes, they will have more bumps along the way – I have no doubt of that, but . . . . they will “always” have each other come what may.

Why must so many of you curse the show and its writers just because you were unhappy with one episode? Seriously, the reason you’re so upset is because you’re so involved in the show and its story. So why not do what the rest of us loyal fans plan to do, and anxiously await the new season and the resolution to the cliffhanger? You may find yourself pleasantly surprised and thrilled with the direction the story takes. Have faith in the writers who have kept 6 seasons of a great show going strong! They’ve kept you interested and following before…I’m sure they’ll continue to do so.

I really agree with you castlelover. This is what happens with long running procedural shows. I have watched ‘Bones’ from day one and have been angry and irritated at the many dips in the show over the years but I still watch it.
Castle is the same and I will continue to watch it because I enjoy the dynamics of the show. Yes I will be upset, WAS upset by the rather weak story line in the finale but am happy to stick with it. Like you say true fans need to have faith. Looking forward to S7

I’m as loyal a fan as any out there and don’t appreciate having that loyalty questioned because many of us TOTALLY DISAGREE with the season ending story. What was most frustrating for me about this episode is that CASTLE is so much more than a run of the mill procedural. The writing, direction, acting and production values are light years ahead of other shows of the same sort. I wasn’t disturbed in the least by the BONES finale because that sort of craziness is what I expect from that show. The same could be said for NCIS, NCISLA, CSI, GRIMM and THE MENTALIST. CASTLE is, or has been , SO MUCH BETTER that I’m truly baffled how a production team that gave us KNOCKOUT, ALWAYS and WATERSHED the last three seasons, could possibly think that FOR BETTER OR WORSE, with all it’s flaws would be blindly accepted by a sophisticated fan base. I will be back in Sept for 7X1, but will need to be totally BLOWN AWAY by the premiere. To this day, I cannot tolerate seeing any reference to FBOW including our beautiful KB in her wedding dress without feeling like throwing something against a wall. If you want blindly “TRUST IN MARLOWE”, be my guest, some loyal fans expect him to return the loyalty.

The show isn’t going to add new viewers—not after that sucktastic of a finale. There was nothing in the finale to suggest any sort of new direction for the show. You basically pulled “ideas” from the EP’s post episode wishful comments in his attempt to explain away what viewers were supposed to pick up on the finale.
