‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Darcy Oake, Jon Clegg, Christian Spridon, Collabro in night #1
Monday night marked the first performance show for “Britain’s Got Talent” this season, and this was an opportunity to really see whether or not this season’s acts can really stack up in the live format.
So did they? We’re going to be giving our full take below, and at the end of the show, we will arrange them in order from worst to first.
9. CountryVive – They weren’t bad per se, but there was literally nothing that was done during this performance that we’d consider to be special. The moves were okay, and choosing “Timber” by Pitbull and Kesha as your song choice seemed almost too cliche and wannabe country for them.
8. Christian Spridon – A complete train wreck, but a very fun one. Our favorite moment of this performance was actually when David Walliams afterwards joked that Alesha Dixon made a career out of miming vocals. One final note? We wouldn’t have done the same song that the Showbears made famous earlier on in the series’ run.
7. Micky Demoulin – Why turn Swedish House Mafia into something that is so dreary? He didn’t do it in the cool way that Kye Sones did, and his vocal range isn’t big enough for this to work beyond a mediocre vocal.
6. Patsy May – We’ve long been a fan of this sort of act, since it really makes creating a character to the next level. This is what the Muppets have succeeded at so well in placing these sort of cartoonish characters into real-world environments. At first, we wondered whether or not this was too simple and not crazy enough, but it picked up as it went along so that Patsy had herself quite a spectacular performance.
5. Henriette Adewole – We were honestly expecting this to be a pretty forgettable performance that brought little to the table. We’re honestly tired of singers on other talent shows. However, this was a strong vocal! We would have preferred to see her on “The X Factor,” but we do agree with David Walliams about the word “haunting.”
4. Darcy Oake – This is the problem with having a stellar magic act: They set the bar very high! Darcy was good tonight, but we have to be honest that his disappearing trick has been done so many other times in other forms. There wasn’t anything that was particularly new or interesting about it save for his style, which we do like.
3. Lauren and Terrell – We really liked this! Not every move was perfect, but the two did a pretty solid job of hitting the stage and doing what needed to be done: Providing an original routine that showed off the personality that the two of them dance. We’ll always prefer smaller dance groups, since you tend to lose something by having a million people on the stage at the same time.
2. Jon Clegg – As an American watching a British show, we don’t get all of the impressions. But the Ant & Dec ones were hysterical, and there are a ton of other good ones that were scattered throughout. Just the energy and talent that was required here to do all of these should be commended.
1. Collabro – Sensational. While we do wish that “Britain’s Got Talent” had a larger song library rather than just hearing “Bring Him Home” again, this was absolutely stellar on all friends. They closed the show, and of course they will be advancing to the finale this weekend.
