‘Supernatural’ season 9 finale spoilers: Jensen Ackles on more twists for Dean
To call “Supernatural” season 9 an easy year for Dean Winchester would be, quite frankly, a lie. He’s not only had the typical sort of brotherly conflict with Sam that has been there since the show’s beginning, but he has also faced a very different problem courtesy of the First Blade. This has caused the character to transform into something far and away different from the man that he once was … and into a killer. In a way, Dean is his own Big Bad right now.
So for Jensen Ackles, it’s been fair to say that this has been a difficult toll on his this year. He explained as much in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, while expressing his hopes that things may lighten up a little for him when season 6 rolls around:
“It’s been a tough season for me … I don’t usually have to play Dean this dark for this long. Usually it’s an episode, and then he comes back and is happy-go-lucky and a Dean we all love to hate or love to love, whatever side of the fence you’re on.” Obviously we’re on the love-to-love side of things.
“I’m hoping that season 10 might lighten him up a bit. [Season] 9 took a bit of a toll, but at the same time, that’s something I don’t expect. Because the show is every evolving and it constantly changes, the characters have to do the same, so even though it was a rough tough season, I still think it was a good season. We’ll see.”
Ackles also said cryptically that the “issue that’s surrounding” the character is really what we should be watching out for when it comes to a big cliffhanger, at least more so than any one character or event.
