ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4 spoilers: Could the show film in Washington?
While “Scandal” has been set in Washington DC for its entire run on TV, it has really been more along the lines of “Washington by way of Los Angeles.” All of the Shonda Rhimes series are filmed within a singular location, which surely makes going between all of theme a whole lot easier.
However, some reports out there claim that the adventures of Olivia Pope could at least briefly come to the nation’s capital for a little work later this summer … at least if everything falls into place the right way. According to Entertainment Weekly, Councilman Vincent Orange claims that someone from the series has contacted him expressing an interest in doing some filming for the show there; however, nothing is guaranteed on this actually happening.
While there are a plethora of shows set around Washington these days, few actually film their scenes in the city. “House of Cards,” for example, films primarily in Maryland, and while “Homeland” was never really focused on DC proper in the first place, it filmed in North Carolina. With some exterior shots and stock video, you can make almost any city look like whatever you want these days.
The reason for all the lack of using DC is mostly due to a small incentives budget, and there are so many more cost-effective places elsewhere. One other way we look at it is like this. A place like New Mexico can use a show like “Breaking Bad” to bring in exposure, jobs, and tourism, but Washington already has enough going on and money that can be allocated elsewhere.
We’ll just have to wait and see come August (which is when the filming could occur) if this is actually made into a reality.
