‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 21 review: Crowley, Abaddon’s return lead to shocking death

Supernatural -Supernatural” has long shown that they are a series without fear. They will kill off popular characters if it suits what they are planning to do in the long-term, often without regard for if it is something that viewers want in the now.

We certainly saw that during Tuesday night’s “King of the Damned,” when the show killed off one of our favorite characters in Abaddon. Sure, this is something that was predictable in that no villain lasts forever, and that women characters in particular on this show do not last for very long. Still, we’ll miss the Queen of Hell. She was unabashedly evil, and her death was almost a more-gruesome version of what Ralphie did to Scott Farkus in “A Christmas Story,” with Dean standing over her and stabbing her with the First Blade over and over again.

Who knows, though? Maybe Abaddon still finds a way to come back, since what is dead may never die (hooray quotes!) is a phrase that is true with this show. Even Bobby has come back in some form. Dean’s lie to Sam was one of the bigger long-term ramifications of this. Sam is aware that the blade is doing something to him, and he would know. Remember the trials? This is starting to have a “Lord of the Rings” – “My Precious” feel to it.

While Castiel’s army was intriguing in theory, our favorite sideplot during this hour was seeing the bizarre father / son relationship that Crowley had with Gavin, who Abaddon brought forward into the 21st century, and then allowed him to try and find a life there.

In the end, what a great episode, no? One of the best of 2014 so far. Grade: A-.
