‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 6 review (PBS): Shelagh’s adoption situation and more

Call the Midwife -We’re not going to sit here and say that Sunday night’s “Call the Midwife” episode was the greatest of the season. As a matter of fact, much of the story seemed to just be building up to the big reveal at the tail end that Jenny Lee was coming back to Nonnatus House.

We’ve already reviewed this episode here from when it aired in Great Britain, so what we want to primarily discuss here instead is a singular theme of adoption, and how the show tends to find a way to constantly mirror its themes with some of its characters. Shelagh, for example, is one of them women who constantly spends a good bit of her time around children. Therefore, it is not altogether surprising or unreasonable that she would want to think about adopting with Dr. Turner.

What makes this story so interesting is that it was one of the few examples where the show was more historical than it was relatable to the present. Some of the issues that she and the Dr. Turner character were going through are specific to that time period, since the whole process of adoption was very different then in comparison to today. We felt for Shelagh mightily throughout this episode, even more so than we felt for Trixie while watching her go on one of the more unfortunate dates ever.

There is more to say about this episode from an analysis perspective, but the discussion will be better served for a little later in the season. For now, this was mostly entertaining filler to get the show to where it needs to be for the final two weeks.
