‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 spoilers: Natalie Dormer on Margaery’s new challenge
Margaery Tyrell is one of the great characters on “Game of Thrones,” and one of the primary reasons for that is simply because of her own ability to constantly play this game. She comes across as kind, nurturing, and generous, and maybe there is a part of her that is these things. However, the other part of her is calculating, power-driven, and very manipulative. She knows what she wants, and also how to get it without bloodshed or threats.
One of the latest examples of that is her “visit” to Tommen during this past episode “Oathkeeper,” and her heading down a very uncomfortable road. She is having to work to set herself up to marry a child, and there is not one part of that can feel easy. However, Natalie Dormer tells Vulture in a new interview that at this point, this is a necessity:
“It’s not a comfortable or pretty scenario for Margaery to be in at all, but she’s not just some cold-hearted, calculating cow that will do anything for power. She’s been given an instruction, and they’re so deep into the game now, she has to follow through. So we’re getting deeper and deeper into the machinations, and it gets more dangerous the further forward she steps.”
Dormer also teases that the “chess game” between Margaery and Cersei is definitely going to continue. They are both out for Tommen’s attention, though are going about it in very different ways. The difference here is that she has to make the child feel welcome, and it’s a very different sort of energy that has to go into this than what she put into Joffrey, where she played mostly into his rebellious side.
