‘Veep’ season 3, episode 2 review: Selina Meyer is pro-something

Veep -Sunday night’s new episode of “Veep” continued its tradition of blending politics and ridiculous comedy, and the story focused on what has to be one of the biggest political hot-button issues of them all: Whether you are pro-life, pro-choice, or pro-somewhere in between.

So where does Selina Meyer stack up in this? It’s more pro-“I’m afraid to do something.” This episode was funnier than the premiere, and focused mostly on Selina trying to come up with a cohesive answer to the question of abortion. She talked to leaders on both side, had a chart made up, and Gary even tried to make a model for her out of fruit. Still, this wasn’t enough for her to save her from going on “Good Morning America” and saying literally nothing. The only thing worse than this was seeing Jonah, now running a blog after being fired, going on MSNBC and making a complete idiot out of himself.

Sometimes, we feel like “Veep” goes a little too broad and makes itself complicated. Not this time. The simple focus led to great satire, since we legitimately believe that there are some people out there who probably do go through this process when figuring out what direction that they want to swing on the political pendulum. It’s pretty pathetic, but makes for great TV. The same can go for watching her entire staff act far too afraid to give her something even close to resembling a concise answer.

Long-term here, we do have to go ahead and say that we are concerned about this Jonah story. He’s interesting if he stays in the veep’s world, but this guy is eventually going to become such a loser, unless he gets a big scoop, that nobody is going to give him the time of day.

While we wouldn’t label this a classic per se, tonight’s “Veep” definitely has us more excited for the rest of the season than we were earlier. Sometimes we wonder whether the show gets a tad overrated, but not with this episode that despite all of its debate, never really went anywhere. Grade: A-.
