‘The Amazing Race 24’ episode 7 review: When Afghanimals become gladiators

Amazing Race -Sunday night’s new episode of “The Amazing Race” was once again, a ton of fun. There was a good detour that featured gladiators and also chariot rides, and also a fun setting in Rome that hasn’t been a part of the show in a long time. It’s nice to see a little bit of history come back into the equation!

There were ultimately a few little things, though, that really separated the winning teams in this leg from the losing ones, and we have to start with not switching detours. This is something that Afghanimals have gotten away with a ton over the years, but about halfway through this episode, it looked like it really did them in. As much of as it was watching them be gladiators, they fell behind all the chariot racers, and they ditched them since they thought it would be way too hard.

The other major mistake? Not figuring out that the Spanish steps were the setting of the Roadblock, and not some random apartment complex. This sent Jessica & John careening backwards, and while we still thought they were ahead of the Afghanimals, the editing tried to make this appear close.

Luckily, we were happy to be wrong given how  Leo & Jamal were so entertaining this episode, and they stuck around thanks to actually getting to the Roadblock first. They then helped out the Globetrotters and Jessica & John after solving the task, and in the end, it was the dating couple who went home.

We actually had Jessica & John making it to the finale, since we thought they were better than they were shown last season. This is just a testament to how close this season is. One mistake can cost you, and we greatly appreciated in this episode how so much of the race revolved around skill rather than multiple equalizers or bad challenges. Grade: B+.

Let’s also give a minute to hype Caroline & Jennifer as a team. For a while, we really didn’t feel as though they were good for anything as competitors honestly. They have mastered the art of the “Amazing Race” alliance, making people completely like them and want to keep them around. They’re not extremely threatening, and they try not to be. With so many great competitors, this is a very good strategy.
