NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Delvin Choice, Christina Grimmie, Josh Kaufman rock out
Did the world really need more battles on “The Voice“? We’re not quite sure that they did, given that we have seen so many of these already. What is there for these contestants to give now that hasn’t been given already?
We will never sit here and admit that we like this format or this part of the competition at all, since we don’t. It drives us bonkers, and we’d much rather see some performances that show off individual artistry. But, there were at least some good ones mixed in here tonight.
Audra McLaughlin vs. Megan Ruger, “The Climb” (Team Blake) – The moment that Audra was put through to this round over Alaska & Madi, we had a feeling that she was bound for the live shows. She’s right in Blake’s wheelhouse, and will do very well with the voters. Sorry, Megan; you never had a real chance at this. Audra wins the battle.
T.J. Wilkins vs. Cierra Mickens, “Get Here” (Team Usher) – A very nice performance. Heck, we’d be willing to wager that it was something that was actually a good duet. We don’t say that next to ever in the battle rounds portion of the competition. Such soul between both of their voices, and we could see Usher going either way … but T.J. was on his team first. T.J. wins the battle.
Jake Worthington vs. Tess Boyer, “Have a Little Faith in Me” (Team Blake) – A very, very good performance, even if we didn’t really feel like it was going to be. While we weren’t surprised by the result of this, Tess is one of those rare stolen-twice contestants that could actually do really well in the live shows. Jake wins, and Tess goes to Shakira. This means that she has been on three out of the four teams so far. Crazy.
Christina Grimmie vs. Sam Behymer, “Counting Stars” (Adam Levine) – Christina did a great job with this performance, but Adam is a smart man and he knew precisely what to do here. In giving Christina a ticket to the live shows, she becomes an instant favorite thanks to her performing history and a very hard contestant to take down the rest of the way. Adam picks Christina.
Patrick Thomson vs. Josh Murley, “Run To You” (Team Shakira) – A solid rock vocal from two guys who know how to do just that: Rock. The most surprising part of this whole performance from us was that Josh really competed. The guy has never felt like he had a chance for two weeks now, but he did an admirable job holding his own here. Shakira picks Patrick.
Delvin Choice vs. Josh Kaufman, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” (Team Adam) – In closing, we had the surprisedecision of the night. Adam chose Delvin! Luckily, Josh was still so smooth and so good that he was able to get another coach in the Davy Crockett lookalike Usher. Adam picks Delvin, while Usher steals Josh.

we love the extra battles! America makes choices based on sob stories, personality, or looks. Save that for another reality tv show. This is about their voices. Who better to do the majority of the narrowing down process than the judges and top people in the industry. I don’t even know if America should be allowed to vote until the top 5. Maybe a social media vote in the top 20 people… a vote that only counts as a portion would be good like they have been doing on Americas Next Top Model. —In other thoughts even though I believe what I said above, I am really bummed that Sam Behymer left us so soon! I love the tone of her voice!! I hope she is still able to come back in another season! I am unclear of the rules as to that.. can a contestant come back if they have gotten further than the auditions?? hmmm all in all though still many lovely voices left <3

Adam blew it…….josh kaufman for sure….it is always fifty percent talent…fifty percent likeability and when america votes it will be josh kaufman..d. choice is amazing but kaufman has the 100%.

Where does the likability come in with Josh? He’s great but so far he’s been pretty boring as a person. I believe America would respond more to Delvin’s humor.

Think it’s fun that we all have interest in such a fun filled show.
I agree both delvin and josh have beautiful voices and may the most deserving win…..no argument with me.

Have to agree wat. Delvin has a million dollar personality and j. Kaufman seems very shy. A little like will Chamblin Last year and he did well..
Time and talent will out…..

Will was great. His secret to success was his interaction with fans on twitter. Made them feel like family (he calls them the #Champs) and thus that made them extra motivated to vote him through. He still continues to do so, too.

How is picking Delvin a surprise? He was clearly the winner of that battle. Not to take away from Josh, who was also great. So glad Usher stole him.

It was a good night of performances. I expected to see Adam choose Josh, and expected that Delvin would be stolen. The only surprise was that it was the other way around. No surprise with Grimmie over Sam. The same for Audra over Megan. Almost anything that happens with Team Usher is hard to predict, except that I expect Bria to go on. The biggest surprise of the night was Tess. Tess was montaged in the blinds, lost and stolen in the Battle Part 1, and lost and stolen again tonight — with three coaches wanting the steal. Wow. BTW: Doesn’t Patrick remind you of last season’s Cole Vosbury? Their looks and voices are similar, and their paths on the show so far almost identical. Weird.
