‘The Amazing Race 24’ review: Brendon & Rachel, Margie & Luke, and drink disasters
One thing that we will give “The Amazing Race 24” a great deal of credit for right now is showing so many sides of the same culture. It was only one week ago that we saw a very different side of Malaysia, and this time around, we went straight into the country’s nightlife scene with a challenge that was basically drinks vs. DJs.
There is almost no point in really discussing that extensively anything that happened before then, save for maybe that Jessica hurt her foot doing the trampoline-themed roadblock before teams traveled to Kuala Lampur. This looked like a physically demanding challenge … unless you’re Big Easy. It’s fair to say that he had a pretty hefty advantage in the height department.
The real test was the Detour at the club, where mixing a complicated drink or using your DJ skills were what would make or break you when it comes to your success. While Jet & Cord and Dave & Connor had an advantage thanks to an earlier flight, they were still able to figure this out in plenty of time. The Afghanimals struggled with the drinks, and eventually switched over to the DJ task. They were in third place, while the Cowboys managed to win yet another leg.
This leg was not particularly eventful due to a lack of locations, and it really came down to Margie & Luke versus Brendon & Rachel in the race to mix drinks. You had one team who was calm and collected, and another who was freaking out. Who would’ve imagined in a million years before this season that Brenchel was the calm team? Luke is a grown an, and still acts immature at times when the stress of the race gets to him.
What really surprised us about this leg was that basically, Rachel’s encouragement is the main reason that Margie & Luke moved forward in the race … and it is not the most particularly fair thing in the world now that someone else capitalized on her being such a good sport. Rachel really is a nice person regardless of what you have seen on TV in the past with her occasional meltdowns, and she proved it here.
Also, good news: It was a non-elimination leg! This made up for what would have been a pretty terrible way to end this episode. Grade: B-.
