‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 10 spoilers: Why Isaiah Washington is returning
There are few things that surprise us anymore when it comes to “Grey’s Anatomy,” but going into this year, there were two things that we were almost sure would never happen: Isaiah Washington coming on the show, or Katherine Heigl doing the same exact thing.
So let it be said now that we are actually surprised with something that is happening to “Grey’s Anatomy,” now that the news is official regarding the return of Dr. Preston Burke for one episode of the show airing during the May sweeps. Likely knowing the sort of commentary that would follow this news, given that Washington was originally fired from the show following season 3, showrunner Shonda Rhimes explained in a statement why it was so important for this character to come back on the show now:
“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should … Burke is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”
With this news in mind, it does make you wonder if it is really at all possible that we could have another appearance from Heigl before everything comes to a close. She does fill a major void in Alex’s history, and despite everything that happened, you cannot deny that she was one of the breakout stars during the early seasons. It would, after all, be intriguing to see what Izzie is up to these days, just as it is Burke. If you have any objections still to Washington, who recently landed his first series regular role since the show on “The 100,” just remember that this is Dr. Burke the character more so than it is him. Plus, everyone loves Cristina and that will be a difficult person to say goodbye to.
