‘Bates Motel’ season 2: Vera Farmiga dishes on Norma, directing, show’s future
For those of you who love “Bates Motel,” the good news is that the show is not that far away from its premiere just yet. Monday, March 3 marks the beginning of the second ten-episode season, where you can expect to see all sorts of drama, intensity, and new faces in White Pine Bay.
Want some specific scoops as to what is coming up? Well, star / Emmy nominee Vera Farmiga and show executive producer Kerry Ehrin took part today in a conference call that we were lucky enough to be part of, and each took advantage of the opportunity to speak out a little bit about the Norma character, new arrivals, and also the possibility of the show continuing to bring us many more seasons.
1. First of all, both parties involved seemed very eager about the potential of there being a third season, with Ehrin saying that “this is an exciting show to work on because there’s something about the relationship between Norma and Norman that keeps on giving.” While we have to wait for the ratings to come in, we think it’ll likely be back for some more seasons in the future.
2. Speaking on the arrival of Norma’s brother Caleb, it was teased as a guy who shows up outside of Norma’s “vault,” when her past memories of him were locked away deep inside. This will be a difficult season for her to deal with.
3. Farmiga stated that the inspiration for this role is “always” herself, and her own experiences that she has with her children help to shape it.
4. Of course, she also said to “be prepared to see some astonishing work from all of” the show’s cast, staying as kind and gracious to them as possible for all of their hard work.
5. Ehrin stated that when it comes to the show versus the movie, “Carlton Cuse and I have always [seen] this as a strange love story between a mother and a son. I don’t mean incest, but it’s intense. It has to go in a certain direction. The relationship that you see with them in the film, she is portrayed as one type of person, and you really don’t know the inner workings of how she got there.”
6. Farmiga claimed that she is interested in directing an episode, and there is an option in her contract for her to do so; however, she is still trying to get a hold of the tone of the show and has no plans this season to jump into the directing chair.
