‘Reign’ season 2 official, joins ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Vampire Diaries,’ ‘The Originals’ with renewal
The CW has wasted almost no time at all here making sure that most of their series get a chance to continue on for a little while longer. Even though the February sweeps are not even over yet, some of the following renewals are official: “Reign,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” and “Arrow.”
The reason that we lead off this article with “Reign” is mostly because it is the only one of these series that had a future in doubt this season. It follows “The Vampire Diaries,” and one could argue that its ratings are in some way tied to the other show. Do we really see it like that? Yes and no. While the show benefits heavily from the lead-in, we’ve seen so many “Reign” trending topics on Twitter that make it clear the show has found an audience of its own.
The most remarkable story of the bunch is “Supernatural.” This is a show that has been on the air for almost a decade, spending most of that time constantly in fear of getting canned. Now, it’s up double digits versus season 8, and it is almost like a legion of people just discovered how awesome the show is. It’s digital viewing is also up significantly.
These renewals in total make up half of the space that The CW has on its primetime schedule, and for now, decisions linger on the rest of their shows. “Hart of Dixie,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Tomorrow People,” and “The Carrie Diaries” are going to have to sweat it out a little while longer. Personally, we see “Hart of Dixie” getting a nod (for syndication), and “The Carrie Diaries” continuing a run on Friday nights. The other two shows have a long fight ahead of them, especially since “The Tomorrow People” is moving to a time where it won’t have the benefit of “Arrow” airing before it. (We’re going to have more on this in a separate article shortly.)
