‘Bones’ season 9, episode 14 review: Sweets the chess master; Brennan’s jealousy
After the very emotional episode of “Bones” last week in “Big in the Philippines,” it really did feel like we were probably due for some sort of letdown this time in “The Master in the Slop.” While this may not have been what we really wanted at the end of the day, it is in fact what we got.
When it comes to the highlights of this story, the one thing that we can really cite above all else is that we saw Sweets seemingly arrest a guy because he lost to him at chess. After the death of a chess master, he went undercover into this world, and showed off some of his own skills in the process. There was only one person capable of beating him, and that was the same person that ended up in handcuffs.
This story in the end become very Sweets-centric because of it, mostly because it was really up to him to properly interrogate this man who treated the business of telling the truth like an elaborate chess game. He had played this entire investigation perfectly, and that is why he was such a difficult subject to pinpoint. That was why the FBI needed to ultimately set him up to take him down using the one person he loved: His mother.
As for the other part of this story, it was mostly all about Brennan having feelings of jealousy over some news that Cam had received a prestigious award rather than her. It was an occasion in which she had to learn a little bit of empathy, and that was nice; but at the same time, this felt like a story that could have been on almost any season. Plus, the decision for the magazine to “honor everyone” was a bit of a cop-out … even though the “calendar” aspect was somewhat hilarious. Grade: C.
