‘MasterChef Canada’ sets premiere date, post-Super Bowl timeslot on CTV

You may have learned already that “New Girl” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are going to air following the Super Bowl on Fox, but what about in Canada? These two shows air on a different network than the one airing the big game north of the U.S. border, so broadcaster CTV has to figure out a different show to promote.

Last year, the network opted to put an original property on the air in “Motive,” the crime drama that aired on ABC in America over the course of the summer. But what about this year? While it may not be a launch, they are going to air an episode of another original show in “MasterChef Canada.” Their adaptation of the series, which was popular worldwide long before coming to America with Gordon Ramsay, will be airing its first elimination episode on that day. The show itself is going to premiere on CTV Monday, January 20 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, which is basically going to fill the hole in the network’s schedule previously held by “The Voice.” This may also be a little bit of an indication that the network doesn’t expect to get “The Voice” back for at least a little while.

The judges for this show are Canadian food experts Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile, and the premise is going to be very much the same thing that you’ve seen in America for many years already. Home cooks from across the country are going to be competing for the opportunity to be named the best, and this means taking on a number of difficult tasks that many shudder to accomplish without the rules and time limits that come with this competition. If this series is anything like the Canadian versions of “The Amazing Race” and “Big Brother,” we could be in for a winner here.
