‘Doctor Who’ 50th anniversary special already available for pre-order

The latest -Want to own a piece of The Doctor on this holiday season? Well, let’s just say that the folks over at the BBC are not waiting too long at all when it comes to making the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special available online to purchase after it airs. The show comes on BBC America, BBC One, Space, or whatever your local broadcaster is on November 23, and it will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray come December 10. You can pre-order a copy now over on Amazon.

So why the click move to make this available online? It all really comes back to the simple fact that it makes sense.  Given that this is the Year of the Doctor more so than “The Day of the Doctor” (which is the title for the 75-minute special), you want to release the product while the show’s popularity is at its peak. Plus, the true diehard fans of the show are going to want to ensure that they have this on a DVD case on their wall, and not just saved on their DVR. We don’t expect this to be hurt very much at all by it already airing on TV.

The question that we are actually more curious in getting an answer to at this point is just if this special can possibly live up to the monumental expectations put upon it to be quite possibly the greatest thing created in human history. You have David Tennant, and that for one makes this risky given that he is viewed by many as their “first” Doctor and an instrumental part in their familiarity with the franchise. There is also pressure in pairing him with Matt Smith, otherwise known as the man who hs inherited the role and led the way for the franchise over the past several years.

Buying this DVD on the 10th will still allow you ten full weeks to check it out prior to the unveiling of the Christmas special, and the consequent regeneration that leads to the arrival of Peter Capaldi as the next man in the title role.
