‘Doctor Who’ 50th anniversary special featuring Matt Smith, David Tennant heads to theaters
While this may not answer the question of whether or not there will ever be a “Doctor Who” movie, it at least confirms that there is going to be an opportunity to watch the most-important special in the series’ history collectively in a theater with plenty of your friends as well as complete strangers who may end up being your friends by the time it’s all over.
Today, BBC America confirmed that the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special, which will star both Matt Smith along with 10th Doctor David Tennant, is going to be shown in theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Minneapolis at the same time in which it is being shown all around the world. This is great news for anyone living in any of these cities, and wants a chance to bask in its glory along with either good friends or complete strangers.
As for a few other welcome details, this special will be shown in 3D at these theaters, and will also have tickets go on sale starting tomorrow. This event is being done in conjunction with Fathom Events, which will also be doing some screenings reportedly on the 25th of November for those unable to see it the first time around. These later screenings will be in 300 cinemas. (You can sign up at the site here to receive more information when it is released.) In a statement NCM Fathom Events’ executive vice president Shelly Maxwell had the following to say:
“The Day of the Doctor’ is upon us and fans of the BBC America sci-fi series Doctor Who have the opportunity to see the time-traveling adventures like never before in 3-D from their local movie theater. There’s never been a better time to be a Whovian during the 50th Anniversary celebration of this huge BBC hit that’s invaded America.”
This airing in theaters will also include a special introduction, and also ten minutes of bonus footage (as in, interviews) for all those trying to justify why they would spend at least $10 plus travel to go watch something in a theater that they can watch from home with their beverage of choice. While this is probably something that we would not want to attend (mostly because we like being able to be as noisy as we choose while watching our favorite special), it’s still something that is cool for the BBC and Fathom to offer for Whovians looking to network with some other fans in their cities.
