‘Glee’ season 5, episode 3 preview: The music from Cory Monteith tribute

After tonight’s “Glee” season 5 episode airs, we will have our first look at “The Quarterback,” the episode dedicated to Cory Monteith’s life that is already drawing quite a reaction online. This is a delicate balance in that you want to celebrate the life of an actor and a character that were important to the show’s fans, but in doing so you always run the risk of being brandished with that label of being “exploitative,” when we don’t get the impression that is what they are trying to do at all.

Want some examples of why? Then just consider the fact that the show is not planning at all to explain how Finn Hudson dies, or to force Lea Michele to spend a ton of time talking about it in the episode. There are going to be public service announcements during the show, and the proceeds from the music sold are all going to charity.

The list of songs at the moment was compiled by Mjsbigblog, and while not confirmed yet, these are songs that we have heard discussed over the past several weeks.

1. “Seasons of Love” from the musical “Rent.”

2. “I’ll Stand by You” by The Pretenders, which is going to be performed by Amber Riley’s Mercedes.

3. “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor, probably the most interesting song choice of the group.

4. “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry, performed by Naya Rivera’s Santana.

5. “No Surrender” by Bruce Springsteen.

6. “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan. This is rumored by the site and TVLine to be the only appearance from Lea Michele’s Rachel in the episode.
