‘Bones’ season 9, episode 1 review: Did Brennan learn Booth’s secret?
“Bones” season 9 has been gone for a long time, and for a good percentage of this episode it certainly was not looking as though Booth and Brennan were going to be ending things. They were distant, anxious, and it was obvious that Booth was lying something. Unfortunately, he had to be as silent as a ghost about Pelant, mostly out of fear that people he loved would be hurt if he ever said anything.
This is where Aldo, a certain ex-priest / bar owner from Booth’s past, entered the fray. He is someone who actually has the capacity to really help these two move forward with their lives together courtesy of some sage wisdom, and to get them on the same page again, difficult as it may be. Eventually, Brennan started to put the pieces together, which led to her visiting Aldo and finding out a few valuable things of her own.
The frustrating thing here is that she still does not know about Pelant, but is at least more aware of one thing: If Booth is hiding something from her, there is a very good reason for that. We’d blast Aldo for being a bad priest, but he’s not really a priest anymore. Therefore, he really doesn’t have to be obligated to keep anything a secret, now does he?
As for the case this week, we cannot really say that this is something to write home about. You would hope that a season premiere would produce something more in the way of sparks or interest on this front, but it was clearly second fiddle; as a matter of fact, most of the characters were so disinterested in at that they repeatedly tried to defer back to the primary issue at hand with the Booth / Brennan relationship.
Overall, this was a pleasant if imperfect start to the season. We feel better about the characters than we did going in, but the journey to getting our two leads smiling again is far from over.
