ABC’s ‘Mistresses’ season 2 hopes helped by increasing ratings

It could happen -For those of you out there who are fans of “Mistresses” (and we’ve seen plenty of you over the past couple of days), there is some good news coming in now from a mere ratings perspective. While the show is still leagues away from being renewed for a second season, we’re seeing now that there are devoted fans out there for the show, and that airing against “Under the Dome” really may have been hurting it.

Airing this week in the 9:00 p.m. Eastern slot, the show had its highest rating since early this season in a 1.3, and it did so despite not having a lead-in like it had with “The Bachelorette” earlier this year. It was enough to win the hour in the 18-49 demographic (which is the rating we stated earlier, and the one that really matters more so than total viewers), and it was also enough for it to easily be ABC’s top show on the night. To be fair, though, the other two programs were repeats.

We know that its odds of renewal are probably still low, but like with another ABC series this summer in “Whodunnit,” we see there being a few good reasons to bring the show back. For one, its ratings were constant all summer long, which proves that those who watched it stuck with it, and maybe they’ll get their friends to tune in over the next nine months or so. It’s also done this in a difficult time slot, and what else does ABC have right now? While it may be a Canadian production that they don’t have to pay much for, they do continue to renew the similarly-rated “Rookie Blue.”

The biggest thing that “Mistresses” can do to earn itself a season 2 is to get up to a 1.4 or a 1.5 for the first-season finale. That is not too terrible rating, as it’s not that worse than what “The Bachelorette” had most of the season.
